Sending the annoying visitor packing

What would the fly swatter business be without flies? Who hasn’t run for the swatter when the sound of a buzzing fly is just too much to bear any longer? Many owners of farm and stable animals have waged a never-ending war on these flying creatures. It is an unavoidable fact that horses, antelope, bison, and deer will attract flies no matter how clean their habitats are. Those of you with horses and cattle already know this firsthand.

Generally, the war on flies has been pretty frustrating, but good news may be here to help keep those flies at bay. It looks like a zookeeper in San Diego has built a better fly trap. (And you can imagine the fly problem a zoo might have, if it were left untreated!) The zookeeper tried many commercial fly traps, all with mixed results. Finally, a breakthrough came when the keeper noticed that the flies, especially the housefly and bottle fly species, were really attracted to old ground meat. A chunk of meat was placed into a commercial plastic bag fly trap, which contained a fly pheromone attractant, and a better fly trap was born.

You can make your own version of this fly control method to use outdoors. Buy a hanging plastic bag fly trap with a pheromone attractant at your local nursery or home center. Many brands are available and any one of them will do. After preparing the trap according to the package directions, add a large quarter-sized piece of hamburger to the bag. Now hang the bag wherever you find flies. Sometimes it takes a few days for the hamburger to have just the right odor. Try placing different amounts of hamburger in your trap too, until it’s perfect for your needs.
